Twice a year, Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB), a group that I’m a part of, holds The IFB Conference. And every year, I see the photos, read the recaps, and watch the videos from afar. But this year, I decided it was time for me to be there in person. So, on February 6th, I’ll be dropping the baby off at daycare and driving up to the city for two days of presentations, panels and seminars.
This is all great news, except WHAT THE HECK DO YOU WEAR TO AN EVENT INVOLVING 400 FASHION BLOGGERS?!?
Talk about pressure. I mean, we’re talking about an event featuring the likes of The Man Repeller, Song of Style and Style Bubble. As soon as I bought my ticket I started doing some browsing. And I found myself looking at the kind of clothes that I felt like I should wear to impress this crowd — I’m talking crazy print mixing, clothes made out of neoprene, six inch heels, etc. But then I realized I was being silly. I want to look like a slightly more fashionable version of myself — but still like myself.
So…I ended up planning my outfits around my top half, which is my normal M.O.
For the first day, I’m planning to wear this Joie Bruno Top, which is actually more interesting in person (or if you click through and look at the zoomed pictures), because the stripes actually look like ropes. The bottom half will be black skinny pants, most likely with black pumps. Not the most exciting outfit, but I feel good in it, and it’s me. Accessories are TBD.
Day two will be my more casual day, wearing skinny jeans with the Diane von Furstenberg New Hanky Blouse. I know it’s not exactly a winter top, but I love it so I don’t care. I haven’t decided if I want to go with statement earrings or a big necklace, so I have some details to work out this weekend.
No one’s going to be bowled over by my style, but I’d rather feel comfortable than be a showstopper. And I have never claimed to be a fashionista — just someone who loves to shop. Hopefully I’ll still feel that way when I’m in a room full of beautiful women in gorgeous clothes!
