{What to Wear} New Year’s Eve

Now that Christmas is over, it’s time for that night of the year when we drink too much, reflect on what has happened in the past year, and make plans for what we’ll do differently next year (i.e. I swear I’m going to stop being a regular at Chipotle this year!).

Whether you’re planning a big night out for New Year’s Eve, or staying in, here’s some last minute outfit inspiration!

Josie Natori Altin Cowl Dress. If you’re going out for a fancy dinner and dancing, a sparkly dress that’s still classy is the way to go.

Parker dress

Parker Architect Beaded Dress. If you’re headed out to a big open bar with all of your friends, you can stick with the sparkles, but go a little tighter and shorter, if you’re up for that.

Rebecca Taylor Laser Cut Tee

Rebecca Taylor Laser Cut Tee. If you’re going to a bar or a party that’s not too fancy, throw on a pair of black skinny pants or jeans, heels, and a fun top like this one (other options here and here).

Three J NYC

Three J NYC Jamie Pajama Set. And if you’re going to be sitting on your couch at home watching the ball drop (which I may be, if my little guy doesn’t kick his cold), you might as well do it in style!

Happy New Year!

Five pairs of heels I want right now

Since well before I got pregnant, I’ve been really lazy about wearing heels. Flats are just so much…easier. But, when I do get myself motivated to wear heels, I always remember why women sacrifice their comfort for the flattering impact that a good pair of heels has on your appearance. So, I have resolved to start working heels back into my everyday wardrobe (just don’t expect me to ditch the flats altogether).

Here are five pairs that I’d love to be wearing this fall!

Banana Republic Ivana Metallic-Trim Pump, $128. A little bit retro, and much more expensive looking than they actually are (especially if you wait for a sale or coupon, which you always should with BR).

Anthropologie Metallic Bow Pumps, $148. Super feminine and soft looking. I love the mix of fabrics.

Rag & Bone Classic Newbury Booties, $475. These are just crying for a pair of skinnies and a big chunky knit sweater.

Kate Spade Leslie Pumps, $298. A very classic style, but the gold heel makes these extra special.

Enzo Angiolini Pallassino, $89.50. There’s something really sexy about the shape of the shoe and the embellishment on the heel.

Are you rocking heels or flats this fall (or maybe some of both)?

Cashmere Haters Anonymous

It’s the time of year where all I want to do is buy gorgeous chunky knit sweaters to throw on with a pair of jeans and boots. And there is no shortage of those sweaters popping up in my favorite stores. But there’s a problem.

I don’t wear cashmere or wool.

I have super sensitive skin and issues with certain textures, and unfortunately whenever I try to wear these fabrics (with few exceptions), I spend the day itching the crap out of myself. There are certain sacrifices I’m willing to make for fashion (blistered feet, NBD), but this is not one of them. So, every fall I find myself scrounging around for the seemingly few sweaters that don’t contain cashmere or wool.

I figured I’m probably not the only person out there with this issue, so I thought I’d share some of this season’s selection of non-itchy sweaters. Enjoy!

 291 Seamed Dolman Tunic, $124.

 Banana Republic Scoop-neck Pullover, $59.50.

BB Dakota Laurine Cable Knit Sweater, $88.

Zara Picot Jacket with Chain Frill and Sleeve, $89.90.

Topshop Knitted Open Stitch Jumper, $52.

Happy shopping!

Just Say No: the overalls edition

There is a picture of me, circa 1993, in which I am rocking a pair of brown corduroy overalls with a matching striped top and pre-braces wonky teeth. No, I will not be posting that photo here or anywhere else on the internet. It might scar you. The point is, despite my 10 year old self’s fashion sense, overalls weren’t cute then, and they’re not cute now. You know who they’ll be cute on? My newborn son, while he’s still a baby.

Unfortunately, several designers seem determined to bring this look back. WHY?!?

Maison Scotch

Gap

So tell me, am I crazy, or should we let overalls stay in our memories (or nightmares) where they belong?

Cardigans to transition into spring

Even though we’ve had some ridiculously warm weather early this year, it’s still pretty cool in the mornings and evenings (at least here in the Philly area). So it’s not as simple as just jumping into short sleeves and sundresses. Which means…the dreaded transitional wardrobe. I personally struggle with this issue a lot — don’t want to be freezing when I leave for work, but also don’t want to be sweating midday. The easiest answer is layering, and probably the easiest way to do that is to throw on a cardigan. Here are some of my favorites to ease you into spring!

BB Dakota Gondolier Striped Cardigan Sweater, $

Halogen Boxy V-Neck Cardigan, $68.

Ruche Joyful Journey Ruffled Cardigan, $40.

Milly Striped Boyfriend Cardigan, $295.

Gap Gathered Crewneck Sweater, $39.95 (comes in 11 colors!).

Marc by Marc Jacobs Michelle Sweater, $258.

Maternity shopping update

For those who are interested in this type of thing, I decided it was time for an update on some of my maternity clothing purchases. I’m lucky enough to have a girlfriend who works for Destination Maternity and took me shopping to utilize her generous discount (thanks, J!), so the first few items are from that trip.

A Pea in the Pod Elbow Sleeve Empire Seam Maternity Blouse, $74.50. Pictures don’t really do this top justice — it’s really cute and flattering in person.

SOLD Design Lab Twill 5 Pocket Skinny Leg Maternity Jeans, $90. Other than wearing leggings, these are the most comfy bottom option I’ve found. They’ve got a full panel, which I definitely need at this point, and are stretchy throughout. Perfect to wear with more blousy tops.

GAP Striped Boatneck Top, $30. Super basic, but looks cute on. Can be totally casual, but I can also get away with it for work with black pants.

GAP Maternity Full Panel Sexy Boot Jeans, $70 (but I never shop GAP without a coupon code). I needed a pair of full panel jeans to wear with flats, so I decided to give these a try. There’s a noticeable difference between these and my designer pairs, but the price was right and they’ll do the job. They tend to stretch out over the course of the day.

NOM Oversize Stripe Tee, $34 on sale (purchased on Gilt, but other styles available here). Extremely soft and comfy — I imagine I’ll still be wearing this one when I’m not pregnant anymore.

B.B. Dakota Ciara Maxi Tank Dress, $95. This dress is actually not maternity, but because of the bust line and excess material, it still works. I’m planning to wear this one for my maternity photo shoot!

I’ve bought a couple of other basic tees and leggings, but nothing worth calling out. Hope this is helpful to any of my fellow pregnant ladies out there!

Minty deliciousness

In keeping with the Easter egg colored jeans trend, mint green is EVERYWHERE  right now — cropping up all over the place, from high end designer goods, down to the most inexpensive mall brands. And it’s coming in all shapes and sizes — bags, shoes, clothes, you name it. I will say that it’s a color that’s not the most flattering on every single person, depending on skin tone, but it’s definitely something any of us can rock as an accessory. Here are some of my picks:

Zara Double Zip Bowling Bag, $79.90.

Tibi 3/4 Sleeve Colorblock Dress, $350.

Ruche Pretty in Blue Pleated Dress, $47.

Topshop Knitted Pointelle Detail Cardigan, $56.

Alexis Bittar Skinny Tapered Bangle, $65.

Happy shopping!

Best of the 2012 Oscars red carpet

Ladies, this is the big one that we’ve been gearing up for all awards season. The Superbowl of red carpets was last night, and overall, the stars did not disappoint. For me, white gowns ruled the evening, which is not usually my thing. There were a few great bursts of colors — in addition to Emma Stone, Michelle Williams came close to making my list with her coral peplumed gown. And then there was Angelina in black. It was a gorgeous gown, no question. But I can’t take any actress seriously when she’s jutting her leg out of a slit so hard (Lea Michele, I’m talking to you!). That posing alone kept her off of my list.

Drum roll please…..here are my favorites of the night:

Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab (via) — Milla was one of the first to hit the red carpet, and she looked completely glamorous in this one shoulder beaded gown. This is what movie stars are supposed to look like!

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji (via) — Octavia has done really well this awards season, but I don’t think she’s ever looked better than in this gown. She should wear nothing but Tadashi going forward.

Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli (via) — Blah blah, Nicole Kidman, blah blah. This girl made heads turn last night, and I thought she looked absolutely stunning. The huge bow isn’t for everyone, but I think she really pulled it off.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford (via) — Stunning. Fierce. She looks absolutely statuesque in a gown that VERY few women could pull off. My only quibble was with her ponytail, which looked unfinished.

Cameron Diaz in Gucci (via) — Cameron’s style doesn’t always do it for me, but I thought she looked fantastic. Yes, her hair and her gown are the same color, but she manages to look like herself (somewhat beachy-chic), while still looking appropriate for the Oscars.

Agree? Disagree? Who were your favorites?

Easter egg colored jeans for spring

Colored jeans aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, but for spring, we’ll see last year’s bold colored denim — reds, blues and mustards — replaced with pastels like mint green, pale yellow and light pink. Perfect for the season!

Siwy Hannah Skinny Jeans

J Brand 811 Ankle Skinny Jeans

Banana Republic Rolled-Hem Pocket Crop

Joe’s Jeans The Chelsea Jeans

Paige Denim Verdugo Ultra Skinny Jeans

Are you feeling these colors, or were you more into 2011′s brights? Or are you sticking to only blues and black?
