Just imagine that you’re sitting in a very public area of Philadelphia (or your closest city) minding your own business. Seemingly out of nowhere, 2500 people dressed in white descend, carrying tables, chairs and picnic baskets. And within minutes, an organized picnic feast is assembled.
Well if you happen to be in the right place on August 22nd in Philly, you might get to experience something like that. The event is called Le Dîner en Blanc (the white dinner) and it’s basically a flash mob picnic. You can read all about it here, but the highlights are that it started in Paris and has expanded to more than three dozen cities worldwide, spots are about as hard to get as front row seats to see Bruce Springsteen at Giants Stadium, and participants have to be clad in white from head to toe.
The rules are pretty simple: ALL WHITE and elegant. No sneakers or flip flops; no shorts or tshirts; no cream, ecru or beige; no pops of color.
As you can imagine, finding out that I scored a spot at this year’s DEB has sent me into a tailspin of shopping. I think I know what I want to wear, but I’m still considering my options — which of course means lots of ordering and returning. (I’m doing my best to single-handedly keep the USPS in business.) If you’re in the same boat, here are a few looks to inspire you!
Have you ever been to a Dîner en Blanc? Are you planning to go this year? If you answered yes to either of the previous questions, let me know if you have any fashion advice!
