Five great SPF products to get you through the summer

SPF products

Honest Company // COOLA Suncare // Supergoop! // Supergoop! // NO-AD

In honor of the unofficial start of summer, I thought it was time to highlight some of my favorite SPF products. If you’re new to the blog, I should probably mention that as a fair-skinned, blue eyed person with a family history of skin cancer, I’m a bit of a crazy person when it comes to sun protection. Just ask my family members, who I drive nuts with lectures about sun safety. I love being outdoors, but that usually means wearing a big floppy hat, a coverup and lots of sunscreen.

Anyway, whether you’re a sunscreen nut like me or just looking for something to keep the wrinkles at bay, here are some great options!

1) I was at a friend’s bridal shower a couple of weeks ago, which turned out to be outdoors. In a very up characteristic move, I was wearing a sleeveless dress and had no sunscreen on, which spelled trouble for pasty little me. Luckily, the bride’s fabulous sister had a tube of Honest Company sunscreen in her car that she uses for her kids. Let me tell you, that stuff is thick as paste, but it works. I very rarely sit in direct sunlight for long, but I survived without my skin turning pink. I’ll definitely be buying this for my little guy (and maybe myself) at some point.

2) I typically do not trust spray sunscreen. I can’t tell where it’s covered, I’m paranoid about the wind blowing it away, and I’m just used to slathering on a traditional lotion. But there’s no question that a spray version is more convenient for touch ups, especially when you’re busy keeping an eye on a toddler who might nose dive into the deep end at any given moment. This Continuous Spray SPF from COOLA Suncare smelly yummy (pina colada), is organic, and in a very unscientific test at my parents’ pool on Memorial Day, didn’t result in me being burned to a crisp. This won’t be my primary sunscreen, but I’m sure I’ll be using it as back up for reapplication.

3) Even when I’m not going to be on the beach or at the pool, I make sure to have a decent SPF on my face. For the last few months, I’ve been using Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum, which is SPF 30 and doubles as my daytime moisturizer. It’s not too heavy, but still thick enough that I feel like I’m getting good coverage. Again, this is an everyday product for me, NOT for heavy sun exposure.

4) My other favorite from Supergoop! is their Acai Fusion Lip Balm, which is also SPF 30. Unlike a lot of sunscreens for the lip, this one isn’t thicky and pasty, but feels like a nice, smooth balm. Plus, it’s not really glossy, so you can make the men in your life use it too. I keep one in my beach bag at all times.

5) Now here comes the truth, after all of the fun products above (which I really do love): when I hit the beach, the most likely product to appear in my bag is NO-AD sunscreen. If you’re not familiar with the brand, it’s probably because – as its name suggests – the company doesn’t advertise. It’s a no frills brand that, if you’re lucky enough to find it at your local supermarket or drug store, comes in big bottles that are cheap. Really cheap. But this stuff does work, and a bottle lasts me forever.

What are your favorite SPF products, either for the beach or everyday skincare? Leave a comment and let me know, because I’m always looking for recommendations!

On the hunt for sun hats

Yes, we’re at the start of the season where I drive everyone around me crazy by lecturing about the dangers of the sun (I’m looking at you, every single girl who thinks the fact they get tan means tanning is safe). I wasn’t going to write about sun hats this year, but I got a special request from a friend, so I just had to oblige!

Happy shopping!

Review: TOCCA SPF towelettes

Another summer, another quest to keep my skin as pasty white as ever. Yes, you read that correctly. In case you’re new to the blog and aren’t aware of my anti-tanning stance, I’ll refer you to this post from Skin Cancer Awareness Month last year.

Anyway, my skincare routine includes moisturizer with SPF every day, high SPF lotion when I’m going to be in the sun for extended periods of time, big floppy hats and beach umbrellas. But sometimes I end up in the sun when I haven’t been able to plan for it (i.e. lunch with my co-workers at a sidewalk cafe in the sun). So it’s great to have an on-the-go option for those times. However, I hate keeping lotions of any sort in my bag, because I’m paranoid about them exploding. And I certainly can’t keep them in my car, because they’d definitely explode in this heat.

Enter the TOCCA Stella SPF 30 Towelettes (one of The Plaza Beauty‘s spring picks). They’re basically like the cleansing towelettes that have become very popular, but are saturated in sunscreen. It’s a lightweight formula with Vitamins E and B5, aloe and marine silk.

I used the towelettes for the first time on a company trip to an amusement park last week. I knew I’d like be in the sun a fair amount, but didn’t want to bring a big bag, or deal with the previously mentioned explosion potential. First of all, these things smell awesome. This is no average sunscreen smell — they are blood orange scented! Definitely a pleasant detail. The saturation level is good: plenty of sunscreen to cover what I wanted it to cover, but not so much that it was messy. It’s not a non-greasy formula, but no worse than a traditional sunscreen.

Most importantly, I didn’t get burned. Which is the ultimate point of judgement. So, two thumbs up, and I’ll definitely be keeping these in my makeup bag.

Protect your lips from the sun

Hopefully at this point, putting SPF on your face and other exposed skin is part of your everyday routine. Or at least when you’re going to be in the sun for extended periods of time. But what about your lips? Many of us beauty product addicts have more lip glosses in rotation than there are hours in the day, but do you pay attention to which products have SPF? If not, it might be time to consider it. If you’re not using SPF on your lips, here are a few products I’d recommend trying.

FusionBeauty has a brand new LipFusion Conditioning Stick with SPF 15 that I was able to sample recently. This is the best product I’ve tried from Fusion so far. It looks kind of like lipstick, but goes on somewhere between a balm and a lip gloss. It’s not remotely thick or sticky and is very conditioning. My favorite color is called butterscotch, which is a nice pale neutral. This currently has a regular spot in my everyday bag.

Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 only has an SPF of 4, so it’s better for everyday use, not really beach days. However, I love this stuff so much that it makes up for the lower SPF.

If you’re more of a drug store shopper, check out Neutrogena’s MoistureShine Lip Soother with SPF 20 (bonus points for high SPF). I’ve bought these several times when I’m out and realize I don’t have any lip products on me, so I need something quick. They’re very reminiscent of Lancome’s Juicy Tubes, which were a favorite of mine in college.
